nilajean told me a story years ago, how she had always cried every afternoon as a little girl, because Miss Lois of KTVI's version of Romper Room never, ever, saw little "Nila" in her Magic Mirror at the end of the program. With child's logic, nilajean felt unloved that the Magic worked for every other boy and girl but not for her. Eventually she grew past the age for Romper Room, but she never forgot the results of her unusual first name.

KTVI tweeted this morning that they were going to have Miss Lois on the morning news for an interview. I made some frantic calls to the station (as their understaffed weekend newsroom producer wouldn't pick up but let the 'phone go to recording and I had to keep re-calling, but after I explained why I was calling, she took our telephone number and said she would try to get it to Miss Lois.

Miss Lois called, bless her heart, and said she still had her Magic Mirror with her and could now see Nila, even though fifty years had passed. Always a kind woman who loved children, she understood how a little girl with an unusual name would feel passed over, and then as adults we had a delightful discussion about how much we all missed the show. It was one of the sweetest conversations I have ever had.

Afterward, nilajean and I got to explain to our boys, born far too late for Romper Room, about Do Being a Do-Bee and Don't Being a Don't-Bee, the "Bend & Stretch" song, and the non-sectarian prayer Miss Lois and the children always said before their snack time. ("God is Great, God is Good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen.")

I haven't seen nilajean with this big a smile in years, as the weight of all that remembered pain melted away. Bless you, Miss Lois. We still love you.

Hello!
Just the community I've been looking for. I was going to start one myself if nothing turned up on my interests search.
Okay, so this is my hello post. I know this link probably isn't quite what this community is all about, but it made me laugh, and it's good news for a whole bunch of Swedes, anyway.

"Negotiators have overcome last-minute hitches to reach a deal in Geneva on giving some of the world's poorest countries access to cheap drugs.

World Trade Organisation spokesman Keith Rockwell described the agreement, which settles a long-standing dispute, as "one of the most important decisions" ever taken by the organisation's executive.

The deal could see millions of people around the world receiving medicines to treat killer diseases for the first time. "

Heating assistance for low income housing in the North

The program, administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, will send $16.5 million to Pennsylvania, $2.95 million to New Hampshire, $5.8 million to Maine, $2 million to Rhode Island, and $12.3 million to Massachussetts, congressional aides said.

"I'm just very pleased the president followed our recommendation and suggestion," said Reed, a Democrat.

"This money is desperately needed," said Reed. "And it will help people tremendously."

New EnCor biotech firm formed to deliver antibodies, pursue invention

EnCor will target neurological diseases, or ailments that impact the body's nervous system. Antibodies will be produced and sold to companies who conduct research on Alzheimer's disease, forms of cancer and blood-clotting illnesses, Gathings said.

EnCor is also the newest tenant at the Sid Martin Biotechnology Development Incubator, a facility that houses startup, biotech-based businesses. Shaw and Gathings moved into a lab at the Sid Martin building last month and still are setting up their operations, but they soon will pursue around $300,000 in financing for an initial round of investments.

"We just need something to get us started," Gathings said. "We'd like to hire a couple of technicians and build a cash flow into the business."

Gathings said he soon plans to move to Gainesville to oversee EnCor's daily operations. Shaw, a native of England, has worked at UF since 1986 and before that earned his academic degrees at settings in London and Germany.

EnCor will have one advantage, in that many of its antibodies have already been produced by Shaw through his research at UF.

"Most biotechs are lucky to have a product developed after 10 years," Shaw said. "We already have a product in place."

Amazon experiences better-than-expected quarterly profit

"This year was our eighth holiday, and in terms of customer experience it was the best ever," Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos told analysts in a conference call.

Bezos said that Amazon also achieved one of its main objectives for 2002 -- to become cash flow positive.

Free cash flow, which includes cash outflows for interest and capital expenditures but excludes proceeds from stock-options, was $135 million for 2002, compared with negative $170 million for 2001, Amazon said.

For the first quarter of 2003, Amazon said it expects pro forma net profit of between $5 million, or 1 cent per share, and $20 million, or 5 cents per share.

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists are turning to desktop printers in an effort to produce three-dimensional tubes of living tissue and possibly even entire organs.

Instead of using a degradable scaffold and covering it with cells to produce tissue, scientists in the United States are modifying ink jet printers and using cells to create 3D structures.

A bit wishy washy, but still good news for all the guys of the world... Girls are starting to catch on to the value of no-strings attached hook ups! ;) Anyhow, I think a story about people having more sex definitely counts for good news.

By 11th grade, she had found the answer: "buddysex," or sexual encounters with friends, in this case a half-dozen private-school boys, no strings attached. At parties mostly, and on the weekend. In closets and bathrooms, parents' bedrooms and friends' parents' bedrooms. Helped along by Smirnoff Ice or, on one occasion, bottles of Dom Perignon.

Low mortgage rates- great for home buyers, homeowners (refinance!), and investors!

The country's No. 2 home funding company said 30-year mortgage rates dipped to 5.85 percent, their lowest since an average 5.83 percent in 1965, from 5.93 percent a week ago.

The 30-year loan has remained below the 7 percent level since mid-April, keeping home sales strong even as the U.S. economy continues to show signs of softness.

"Just when we were sure mortgage rates couldn't possibly drop any lower, we were surprised yet again," said Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac chief economist.
